May 30 – July 18 2022

About

The first North America hackathon in the new Global Series from Polkadot has arrived!

This fully virtual six-week program in association with Web3 Foundation continues on from the huge success of October 2021’s Polkadot APAC Hackathon, and brings together a diverse community of blockchain developers ready to build and collaborate.

Although the event is focused on North America, it is open to everyone, everywhere. The program is designed to create the ideal environment to make and break new blockchains, learn from your fellow attendees, and hack to your heart’s content!

This is the perfect opportunity to network with a global community of developers to make lasting connections, and be in with a chance to win from a massive prize pool.

Total Prize Pool: $600,000+

More challenges and prizes will be added from Polkadot ecosystem teams in the upcoming days.

Put your hacking hats on because New York, here we come! Make sure to APPLY NOW, only limited seats are available.

Categories

Category 1: Interfaces & Experiences

This track is dedicated to building your understanding of UI and UX fundamentals, including best practices specifically for blockchain development. Gain experience in building a wide variety of interfaces and user experiences that chains can adopt.

Category 2: DAO & Governance

Discover the breadth of DAO functionality and governance mechanisms in this track. Get the opportunity to explore ideas, including the creation of new DAOs and the necessary tooling involved in this development process, as well as new governance mechanisms and pallets.

Category 3: Web3 & Tooling

A diverse track focused on all kinds of tooling and applications that can be used to expand Web3. Those interested in building a better web can explore the use cases for open-source technologies for a society run on peer-to-peer networks.

Category 4: DeFi

Builders can make use of this track for the multitude of DeFi-related solutions, including DEXs, AMMs, and stablecoins. Learn how to not only develop new financial primitives, but also work towards the integration of existing ones, such as breaking the barriers of assets between blockchains. This all contributes to helping build wider adoption of DeFi.

Category 5: NFT

This track for developers interested in the use cases for NFTs will explore the scope for their creation across multiple industries, including gaming, art, real estate, logistics, and general collectibles. The scope includes exploring the importance of optimizing for complex NFT use cases, and blockchain-agnostic NFT platforms that enable cross-chain functionality.

FAQs

The event will be held from May 30 to July 18, 2022.

This event may be focused on North America, but it is open to all.

Whether you’re an experienced blockchain or non-blockchain developer, want to learn more about building on/for Polkadot, or are entirely new to the Web3 space, we welcome you!

You can enter the hackathon as long as you are above 18 years old and a citizen of the eligible countries.

(Please refer to the eligibility restrictions section on DevPost to check the list of countries whose residents are not eligible to take part in this Hackathon)

Yes! We want anyone with ideas or the passion to innovate to participate. Teams will however need at least one individual who can build/code a prototype as a code artefact is required for project submission.

You may choose to hack solo. If you are forming a team – there is no minimum or maximum number of team members, but we highly recommend that you form teams of 4 or 5 people.

Teams are recommended to be formed within your own locations & time zones to avoid time zone fatigue but this is not mandatory. You can choose to join a team located in another time zone as well.

View our detailed Team Formation Guide (found in the Participant’s Guide when you sign up).

Yes! Only registered individuals are eligible to participate and collect the prizes. Please ensure that all members of your team have registered their teams accordingly as well.

While we hope you’ll be able to build on Substrate, we welcome everyone to build based on whatever knowledge, skills and expertise you have. One of the objectives of the hackathon is for you to learn and understand about the Polkadot ecosystem, so we welcome anyone to join us!
